What is UTM, how it works and where do I see the data?

These questions pop up again and again at work and from some friends, so I decide to write a post about it.

1. What is UTM: Urchin Tracking Module is a set of five parameters that defines your online marketing campaign. Check more explanation on Wikipedia.

2. How it works: you buy a web banner and link it to your website (mysite.com), instead of the normal banner link (ie.www.mysite.com), you apply the UTM code(ie. http://www.mysite.com/?utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=xmas-discount). Those code will carry those parameters, ie. cpc, AdWords, Xmas-discount, and give you more information about your website traffic.

Here is an online UTM converter that helps to do the UTM converting job for you:

3. Where do I see the data: So, you have done the above and launched your campaign, where in Google Analytics can this data be found? Here: analytics.google.com go to Acquisition > Campaigns > All Campaigns
